This I Remember

Coach Gary Bowers: “Believe it or not, I met Mrs. Babe Ruth (Claire) at a Babe Ruth Baseball Banquet on the East Coast back when I was a young player. Actually, I was able to look her in the eye and shake her hand. She had to be pushing 90 then. I never forgot that day.” (Babe’s first wife died in a fire.)
“Another favorite memory was my freshman year at Fullerton College, we had seven bench clearing brawls. One was a classic! We were playing College of the Canyons. Their coach had been harassing the umpire for seven merciless innings and the umpire finally had enough. He told their coach, ‘OK Coach, you have had your say, now let’s play ball’. We took our positions, pitcher on the mound and the coach came back out of the dugout, stepped in front of home plate with his back to our pitcher and told the umpire, ‘I’m not done yet.’ The umpire pointed to our pitcher and yelled, ‘Play ball.’ Our pitcher puts a fastball right between the shoulder blades of their coach... It dropped him like a heart attack....Both benches emptied, the fight lasted 20 minutes....Craziest thing I witnessed in my baseball career.”
