Larry Steven “Steve” Philpott, 71, of Oak Grove, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024. Services will be held on Friday, February 9th at Royer Funeral Home in Oak Grove, with visitation at 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Balltown Cemetery in Richards, MO.
Steve was born July 14, 1952, in Nevada, MO, the son of John R. Sr. and Naomi (Stoddard) Philpott. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1970 and continued his education by graduating from DeVry to further his career as an electrician at Missouri Public Service, where he started working in 1972. Steve retired from KCP&L after 45 years.
Steve’s love for Bonnie was unconditional. He would drop everything and hung on every word of her request. He loved Bonnie so much and was a true romantic to her. When it came to his kids, he would scold in such a wise manner, but sometimes, Tracy needed more as she pushed his patience to the limit, but wow, how she learned his grace through his love. How he raised his kids was very patient, kind, and warm, and made them feel so loved, no matter what mistakes they made. Steve held them accountable, but with open arms. He enjoyed spending time with his son remodeling homes and flipping houses, as it became a passion for Greg.
Being a granddad was his highest priority of accomplishments, from watching Jillian’s volleyball tournaments to watching Bridgette perform in School of Rock, choir, wrestling, and swimming. His greatest memories with his girls were wrestling with them in the living room and walking the property and exploring nature together.
Steve was passionate about his music and enjoyed playing guitar. He traveled to Buckner for jams weekly. Steve and some of his musician friends formed a band, Fire Prairie Creek, back in 1981 and still played together after all of these years. His favorite time of year was going to Winfield to the Bluegrass Festival, where he made an enormous number of friends, which came easy to him. Steve also enjoyed taking care of his property, going fishing with his brothers, and going to the Royals spring training with his brother, Dave. He was always willing to help anyone in need.
Steve was a loving father, grandfather, and most of all, a loving husband of a few days short of 51 years. Loved ones he leaves behind include his wife, Bonnie Philpott, of the home; son, Greg Philpott (Heather) of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Tracy Gregory (Brad) of Wichita, KS; two grandchildren: Bridgette Philpott and Jillian Gregory; three brothers: John Philpott of Salisbury, NC, Dave Philpott (Rhonda) of Lenexa, KS, and Jim Philpott (Mary Lou) of Clinton, MO; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Ruth Philpott.
