Out Of Africa: Farm Mission To Be Topic Of March 19 CWC Luncheon

Posted

Celebrate the arrival of spring and anticipate Easter by attending the Tuesday, March 19, luncheon of the Christian Women’s Connection.
CWC organizers decided on a spring theme for the luncheon, as St. Patrick’s Day will be over, and Palm Sunday and Easter on the horizon. Arrive at 11:45 a.m. and enjoy a hot lunch, catered by Melinda Dehn, including an entree, side dish, salad, bread, dessert and drink, for $14. Make reservations for the lunch by Friday, March 15.
The Christian Women’s Connection is open to all, and is a opportunity to get together with friends once a month for lunch and enjoy a program. The speaker for the March 19 luncheon will be Mike Town, owner of Integrity Floors. Mike will tell stories about the years he and his family spent on a rural mission project in Zimbabwe. They lived on a farm with other families and raised cows, goats and chickens. The farm served as a conduit for a ministry of reconciliation in the country, Mike said, which had been split by revolution.
It was in Zimbabwe that Mike learned about the healing powers of comfrey, an herb that he grows and makes into a salve and markets in the region.
In addition to running Integrity Floors and making Papa Town’s Comfrey Salve, Mike volunteers his talents as a musician at senior centers in the area. Along with telling stories about his family’s experiences in Africa, he is expected to end his program by playing some popular songs on the violin.
At last month’s meeting, Scott Brooks, owner of Clinton Flower Shop and a church musician, ended his program by sitting down at the piano and taking requests for favorite hymns. Scott spoke on using the gifts God gave you, and shared anecdotes about playing for weddings and funerals at the different churches in town, often on a pipe or electric organ he had never seen before. Sometimes he had to guess what the stops were, he said — some were not labeled, just numbered, and on one, the stops were written German.
The name of the CW Connection was changed from the Christian Women’s Club to reflect a new direction for the group, which originally started as part of an interdenominational network of women’s clubs, part of Stonecroft Ministries. As the Christian Women’s Connection, it now focuses on speakers from the local community, who provide insights into their lives and how they live out their faith.
