Looking Back with Guest Sports Reporter Tim Komer

30 Year Ago . . .

In 1992 (30 years ago) George H.W. Bush was our President, the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series, the Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl, boxer Mike Tyson was convicted on multiple charges, including rape, Silence of the Lambs was the best picture, I was teaching in Harrisonville, and Brian Henney was the Democrat’s Sports Editor.
For me, it is hard to believe that 1992 was thirty years ago. Brian was the Sports Editor for 17 years. (I wrote a ‘Looking Back’ about Brian last week.) He died in 2000 at the age of 42. With Brian gone, a string of amateurs, including myself, have tried to fill his shoes. We obviously could not. Maybe our current Sports Editor, Alex Edwards, can get it done. With all that said, I grabbed some old 1992 Newspapers (Sept.-Dec.) and had a look. My weekly “Looking Back” will be about 1992 for a while.
First, the Cardinals football team secured a victory over the Butler Bears 12-0. (Butler has always been tough-they have been very good lately). Bob Endy was the coach. Endy, by the way, is the winningest Cardinal football coach in our history. His CHS career record was 52-34. In 1992 the Cardinals ended up with a 6-4 record. They beat Butler, Nevada, Kearney, Tipton, Eldon and Osage, losing to Harrisonville, O’Hara in OT, Warrensburg, and El Dorado Springs. The football players Brian wrote about were, QBs Steve Markham and Chris Scott, Eric Avondet running back, Andy Komer, fullback. Steve Hoskins. Brian Noeller were the most used receivers. Other standouts were John Richardson, Jeremy Tidmore, Tim Stone, and Will Aldredge.
