During the end of the year break, both Windsor High basketball teams participated in the William D. Gordon Holiday Classic held at Drexel. Both Windsor teams earned the consolation trophy.
The Greyhounds' girls’ squad was the fourth seed and took on Kansas City Lutheran, the five seed to start the tournament. The Knights claimed the win in a close game 43-38. The top scorers for Windsor were Dani Ashby with fifteen and Nevaeh Blythe with 12.
The Greyhounds had a bye going into the consolation championship. They then defeated Miami 54-43. Ashby scored eighteen points and was followed by Blythe with seventeen and thirteen by Taylor Luetjen. Speaking of the consolation championship game, Coach Tony Balbirnie commented, “We were proud of the girls’ effort. We shot the ball much better from the field and the free throw line.”
Windsor’s boys team was also the four seed going into the tournament and matched up against Midway who was the fifth seed. The Vikings doubled the Greyhounds nine points in the opening frame and held on to win 64-56. Ryan Millington led Windsor with 22 points. Rowan Cox and Conner Barnes each scored a dozen points for the Black & Gold.
Next up for Windsor was Chilhowee and the Greyhounds came away with their first win of the year. Windsor dominated the scoreboard scoring in double figures each quarter while holding the Indians in single digits in each frame. Millington led the way with eighteen points followed by Cox with thirteen, and Barnes with twelve. Brayden Pipal and Cox led the team in rebounds. Reece Heany, Jude Burkhart, and Millington led the team in assists.
The Greyhounds closed out their tournament with a win over Miami 63-37. Leading in points were Cox with 25, Millington with seventeen and Barnes with eleven. Coach Dave Hesse noted, “We didn’t play well against Midway in the first game. We really turned up the intensity in the last two games. We are starting to realize team play beats individual stats. Defensively we are getting much better.”
