Lady Cards Grab Rare Win Over Kaysinger Foe, Smithton

Growing pains. Second year Lady Cardinals basketball coach Brett Bryant could write a book.

"We have improved tremendously from the first of the year," the coach said. "I see it in practice. We can run drills that we couldn't run before. There are so many things that don't show up in the game or in the box score."

On Friday night, January 5, Lincoln defeated Smithton at home by a final score of 40-35 for their third win of the season to improve to 3-19.

Asked about the game, Bryant replied, "We won. We tried to give it away. They played a box-and-one on Alyssa Mellen. I stuck her in the corner and we played four-on-four.

He added, "Mackenzie Yearout scored our first eight points. We were up 12 (32-20) going into the fourth. The full court pressure hurt us but we survived."

It was close at 9-6 after one and 16-11 at the half with the Lady Cardinals on top.

Smithton, with just six players, fell to 5-5 on the year.

LINCOLN (40): Yearout, 13; Pennell, 7; Helland, 2; Mellen, 9; Harvey, 9.

SMITHTON (35): Goustan, 2; Ka. Simmons, 4; Ke. Simmons, 12; Goss, 11; Tripp, 4.
