Get Organized: “ScrapStashtic” Author coming for Quilt Show October 7th & 8th

On Oct. 5, Janellea MacBeth will pack up a trunk of quilts and drive 1,100 miles from her home in the Poconos, north of Philadelphia, to Clinton. A nationally-known speaker and author, she will be making the trip to be the featured presenter at the 2022 Greater Golden Valley Quilt Show on Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct 8.
“She will give trunk shows at 1 p.m. both days of the show,” said Jody Anderson, guild president, “and also emcee demonstrations by vendors throughout the day.”
Guild member Laura Reynolds met Janellea at a business conference for quilters, and invited her to the guild’s 2022 Quilt show. Laura is the owner of Fluff and Ruffles long-arm quilting, and is vendor coordinator for the Quilt Show, which is being held at the Benson Convention Center for the second year.
The Convention Center has 10,000 square feet of display floor, so there’s room to step back from the quilts, which are hung from large frames in the middle of the room, and appreciate the designs and workmanship.
“We’re expecting around 100 quilts,” Jody said.
The convention center also has lots of space for vendor tables, which will run along three walls. Coming from Kansas with a truck full of fabric is Overbrook Quilt Connection. Whistle Stop Wool from Joplin is bringing fabric, and City’s Edge in Warsaw is bringing precuts, kits and embroidery sewing machines.
In the past, the Guild’s Quilt Show was held in the Rotary Building on the Clinton Square during Olde Glory Days. With the move to the Benson Convention Center, the Guild charges a $5 entry fee to the show to cover expenses.
New this year: door prizes will be awarded throughout the two days of the show, with each vendor supplying a prize. In addition to fabric vendors are Fluff and Ruffles, Connie’s Quilt Art, Toadilly Quilt pattern designs, Creative Hands, and Mother and Daughter Creations, which make tee-shirts and quilt-themed gift items.
As a service project, the quilt guild will be selling bags of scrap fabric from Missouri Star Quilt Company, with the money going to the Missouri Quilt Museum.
Teresa Sell of Wooden Quilt Creations is coming from Nixa, Mo. Teresa makes quilt block signs to order for barns, porches or garden sheds, and smaller quilt block designs for interiors. She will have fabric-themed coasters and magnets. Craftsman Ron Mapes will be displaying cabinets for quilt storage. A scissor sharpener will set up his trailer in the parking lot. Chair massage will be available in the Benson Center, Jody said.
Janellea is the author of the best-selling book, “ScrapStashtic: Organizing Your Scrap Fabric Stash and Actually Using It.”
“She’s really good at inspiring people to use what they have,” Laura said.
Janellea was making scrap quilts before she was five, sewing squares of fabric together to make doll blankets. Her book tells quilters how to process, organize and store fabric scraps to keep them from overwhelming a sewing room.
Food will not be available on site this year. The show opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. The Opportunity Quilt will be raffled at 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 8. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. You do not have to be present to win.
Other activities in town include Clinton Regional Airport’s Vintage Military Fly-in on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weather permitting, World War II aircraft will arrive and airplane rides will be available. No charge to attend. Call 660-492-9521 for information.
The quilts go up Thursday night before the show with the help of National Honor Society members and Future Business Leaders of America students at Clinton High School, where Jody works as a para-professional. The quilts will be judged that day by professional quilt-show judges.
Jody thanks Quilt Show sponsors — Hawthorn Bank, White Flower Quilt Shop, Groff Dentistry and the Greater Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce — and Quilt Guild members , who have been busy finishing quilts and getting the word out.
“We distributed posters all over the state,” Jody said.
The GGV Quilt Guild meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Clinton Christian Church. Come at 5:30 p.m. for snacks and socializing. All are welcome. The church is located at 1201 E. Ohio, Clinton, MO 64735. The guild has 45 members, Jody said, with new people joining all the time.
In addition to the trunk showings, Janellea is teaching a Jelly-Roll Quilt workshop on Sunday, Oct. 9. Cost of the workshop, which is open to the public, is $30.
The Benson Center is located at 1008 E. Sedalia Ave, Clinton, MO 64735. There is plenty of free parking.
