Charles “Charlie” Wayne Engelken, 72, of Clinton, Missouri, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.
Born and raised on a farm in Iowa by Ralph and Rita Engelken, Charlie was one of 11 children. Growing up in a big family taught him the values of hard work, resilience, and the importance of community — traits he carried with him throughout his life.
Charlie made his home in Clinton, Missouri, where he married his wife, Jean Ann (Schilling) Engelken, on June 25, 1994. Together, they shared over 30 years of love, laughter, and partnership. Charlie is survived by his wife, Jean Ann, and their children Doug (Allison) Schilling, Kirsten (David) Engelken, Erica (Tom) Pilla, and Janice (Tommy) Buterbaugh. He was the proud grandfather of five: Sophie and LaLa Schilling, Tessa and Tatum Pilla, and Lucas Buterbaugh. His grandchildren were his greatest joy, and he treasured every moment being their PaPa.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Engelken; his brothers, Fred Engelken and Steve Engelken; his father-in-law, John Nuhn; and his mother-in-law, Betty Nuhn.
He is survived by his mother, Rita Engelken, and his siblings Dennis Engelken, Karen Mantele, Linda Krueger, Diane Ogden, Loras Engelken, Mary (Steve) Sheppard, Tom “Boots” (Jen) Engelken, and Pat (Tom) Taylor.
A master carpenter and former mortician, Charlie had a gift for fixing anything and everything. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening, bird watching, watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, and being with family. His hardworking nature and warm personality were matched by his ability to build, mend, and create, whether with his hands or through the relationships he nurtured. Charlie truly never knew a stranger and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
