CFD Visits CCA, Fire Safety At Its Best!

Posted

Firefighters from the Clinton Fire Department visited Clinton Christian Academy on Wednesday, October 4. Two sessions were presented during which preschool-grades 2 and grades 3-5 were presented with fire safety information. The session for preschool-2nd graders focused on basic fire safety. CCA’s students were taught about what types of emergency situations warrant calling 911 and CDF Firefighters emphasized the importance of learning their home address to share with dispatch.
Captain Chris Reno, Cinton Firefighter, also trained students on the appropriate actions to take if a student’s clothes ever caught on fire. CCA student volunteers were chosen to demonstrate the “stop, drop and roll” action and were trained in covering their faces in order to protect their airways. CCA students Knox, Jules, Carter & Emsley were chosen to demonstrate the “stop, drop and roll” procedure in the session for the youngest students and Roman demonstrated this technique for the group of older students.
Other training at the Fire Safety Programs included information about smoke detectors and deciding upon a designated safe meeting place at home. Students were reminded that smoke detectors can smell smoke. Every house should have smoke detectors, and they should be placed high on the wall in the home because smoke rises. Firefighters also emphasized that smoke detectors should be loud enough to wake one up, the importance of changing the batteries twice a year, and checking the expiration date on the back side. A smoke detector typically lasts about 10 years! Students were instructed to contact the Clinton Fire Department to get a free smoke detector.
The preschool-2nd grade students were instructed by CDF Firefighters concerning what to do if they are in bed and their smoke detector goes off. Sleepy Sammy demonstrated how to check their bedroom door for heat, crawl close to the floor, or to open their window and yell for help if the student’s bedroom is on an upper level.
Older elementary students were treated to a humorous skit during which they met “Chef Fry” all the way from Oceanside, CA. Chef demonstrated how to make “hyper roasted duck.” This humorous demonstration focused upon kitchen safety utilizing both the oven and stovetop! Students were instructed that if a kitchen fire occurs in their home while cooking to get out of their house, call 911 and leave the oven door closed!
Volunteer Firefighter Jack Wright (CCA graduate of 2022) concluded each session of the programs presented by demonstrating the protective gear worn by firefighters. All students received fire prevention materials to take home and share with their family.
CCA extends a big THANK YOU to CFD firefighters Matt Willings, James Hinkle, Jack Wright, Matt Kramm, and Chris Reno for these awesome presentations!
