The State ranked Windsor Greyhounds go to 11-0 by winning the C1D4 Semi-Final game over the 7-3 Adrian Blackhawks, 36-12. The game was played at the David Powell Memorial Field in Windsor on Friday, Nov. 5. In the first quarter the Greyhounds started the scoring going up 8-0 on a run by Dalton Witherspoon (Dalton scored four TDs in the game). The Greyhounds often use the 2 point conversion after a TD and they are usually successful. Adrian had to punt on their first two possessions. After Windsor’s first TD the Adrian defense forced the Hounds to throw an interception and punt on their next two possessions. It was a tight ballgame at 8-0 going into the second quarter.
The Blackhawks using big plays and a gutsy fourth down run scored and made it 8-6. Both sets of fans got even closer to the edge of their seats. The Blackhawks were led by QB Colton Bass and RB Hunter Bailey. The Greyhounds did not take long to answer. They scored on another Dalton Witherspoon run and made it 16-6. With the Witherspoon brothers, Dylan, Dalton and Payton getting most of the ink it should be noted the Greyhounds are loaded with talent to include Corbin Ball, Gabe Hesse, JJ Hall and many others.
The game started to shift when Adrian fumbled on their next possession. The Greyhounds took advantage of the turnover and made it 24-6. This time young Parker Craig got the call and the TD. Even when the Blackhawks came back with their own TD and made it 24-12, most still felt the Hounds were in control. Adrian used an on-side kick to regain the ball but had to punt on their last possession before the break. It was 24-12 Windsor.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. Adrian had three possessions with a punt, fumble and a critical turnover on downs on the Windsor goal line. In other words, the Hounds defense certainly did their job. This was clearly a turning point in the ballgame. In the third quarter the Windsor offense only managed a punt and an interception. The score was still 24-12. It was a two score ‘anything was still possible’ ballgame. But the fourth quarter belonged to the Hounds, they scored twice and made it 36-12. Windsor’s Coach Jake Vencill not only has a lot of speed and talent on his squad but they are also in shape. They seem to always control teams in the fourth quarter. The Blackhawks looked tired and were not able to sustain any late drives.
The 11-0 Windsor Greyhounds will take on the 8-3 Skyline Tigers. The Tigers beat the 6-3 Lincoln Cardinals in the other District Semi-Final game, 50-12. The Windsor vs Skyline game will be played at Skyline on Friday, Nov. 12. Remember, this game is a rematch of last year’s classic. Last year Windsor made a goal line stand at the end of the game and won the District Title over Skyline, 44-36. Windsor went on to win the 2020 State Championship. Most would predict another classic game this year. Go Hounds.
