Looking Back at 1992 (#4)

What happened 30 years ago? Wait a minute, I have been looking at digital pages of the 1932 Henry County Democrat. Now that is “Looking Way Back”, 90 years to be exact. It was fun reading about Blairstown beating Clinton in a baseball game. It was fun reading about the outdoor basketball leagues. It was also interesting to read an article about the death of Thomas Edison (1847-1931). Well, let’s get back to 30 years ago.
1992 National Sports: Barry Bonds signed the highest single year contract in MLB history, $4.7 million with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Danny Everett ran the 400m world record indoors with a time of 45.02 seconds. NHL players began the first strike in the league’s 75-year history. Al Unser Jr. won the Indianapolis 500. Owners approved the sale of the baseball team Seattle Mariners to a Japanese group. Tennis player, Arthur Ashe (1943-1993), was named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year.
1992 Local Sports: Cardinal alum and sports star Billy Baird did well at Baker University, (Baird is presently the major of Lee’s Summit). Brent Wagoner won a bowling award, bowling 709 at Meadow Lark Lanes. (Teammates: David Nelson, Bill Vanderburg, David Albertson, and Irl Robinson.) These guys were some of the best bowlers of their era (Oh, the memories). Local swimmers did well at the Show-Me Games: John Richardson, Sarah Johns, Megan Mills, Emily Abdoler, Parker Mills, and Mark Eshelman.
