Have I Got A Line For You!

The P.C. Police are at it once again. This time it’s DC Comics dropping the words, “American Way” from Superman’s motto. I remember seeing Superman at the Roxy way back in 1978. Most of us grew up with “Truth, Justice and the American Way” and have always thought it was the right way to live. Replacing it with, “A Better Tomorrow” sounds like a Biden campaign speech. Bet it won’t be long until there’s a campaign to scrub the word “America” from school curriculum. In New York, the city council voted to remove a statue of Thomas Jefferson from their chamber. The vote was unanimous with one councilman saying the statue was offensive and should be tossed in the garbage. It was gifted to the city in 1834, by Uriah Phillips Levy, our nation’s first Jewish Naval Commodore. He admired Jefferson’s belief in religious freedom. Wouldn’t it be more helpful to stop focusing so much energy on the past and build a better future for generations to come? You can’t change history, but you can learn from it, if you don’t rewrite it or erase it. Good Lord, we don’t need to worry about China or the Taliban destroying us, we’re doing it ourselves. Speaking of China, they launched a hypersonic missile that circled the globe at low earth orbit. Some experts say it could overcome our anti-ballistic missile systems in Alaska. Our government says we have nothing to worry about. When that happens, it usually means we're in trouble. Do you think General Milley got an advance call from his Chinese counterpart?

Received a phone call early this morning that friend and former co-worker Doris Smith died. She fought a lengthy illness with courage and a sense of humor. Doris was a class act and a lesson in how to handle a terrible situation. We worked together in the late 90’s in Dallas at MRG. Learning about her passing reminded me of something my Grandmother Murphy once told me, “The Irish know that life will eventually break your heart.” This is true for all of us as we lose people along the way. But we have to go on and good things will come again into our individual worlds. Sometimes other people help us do this. There are people who are good “pray-ers” and help those hurting with light to dispel the darkness. I do believe in this, but won’t go on at length. Our universe is a complex place and we know so very little about all that’s out there. Yet it can respond to our appeals with a graciousness that is beyond belief. I’m on a meandering roll here. But I’m grateful for (most) of the places my feet have taken me and most grateful to be right here with good friends, especially for the few unfortunates I can “unload on” from time to time with my predicaments. Sometimes they bring me theirs too. I’m thankful to be in this country, despite the crazed political landscape. Our troubles are a drop in the world’s pall of woes. I do wonder though, if the hunt for Brian Laundrie will still be going on ten years from now? As a Biblical sufferer cried, “How long, O’Lord, how long?”

Enough of these musings. It’s a pleasant fall day and life is good. Thanksgiving is waiting in the wings. Take care of yourself.
