Have I Got A Line For You!

Met niece Maeve Lorenz at a pool hall in Overland Park on Saturday. She’s become an expert and despite getting “schooled” it was an enjoyable afternoon. On the drive back a couple of memories shook loose. How many people remember the Murphy sisters who came to Warsaw in the early 80’s and opened Murphy’s Pub on old 65? They were famous for their pool skills and their temper. They whacked a Warsaw attorney over the head with a pool stick when the game didn’t go their way. When my Dad was out of school in the late 1940’s, due to a collapsed lung, my Grandfather White bought a pool table for him. It came from the boardroom of the Osage Valley Bank (Now Hawthorn) on Main Street. Dad became a pretty good pool player, but, sometime in the 1960’s Grandpa White gave the table to the Clinton Fire Department. Wonder where it is now?

Thousands of Haitian migrants that were living under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas have been allowed in. What happened to the 5 billion we’ve given Haiti since 2010 to help its people? You can’t blame these folks for wanting a better life, but breaking the law is no way to do it. Have we learned nothing from other countries? Look at the mess Europe is in with immigrants who refuse to integrate and are hell bent on re-creating the same failed environment from which they escaped. The only winners in this mess are drug cartels who get paid to smuggle these poor souls across the border and our big corporations who get an inexhaustible supply of cheap labor. In the meantime most of our media is focused on January 6 insurrection conspiracies.

The derailing of an Amtrak train in Montana was a terrible thing happening, with several people losing their lives and many injured. Haven’t been on Amtrak in years and remember wishing at the time that I wasn’t. If our politicians do pass an infrastructure bill, let’s hope it actually gets used for infrastructure. We need a modern rail system along with bridges and highways repaired. The proposed bill has 38 billion to plant trees, 10 billion to create a Civilian Climate Corps and 175 billion for an all electric government car fleet (where would they find that many plug ins?) and a lot of other nonsense.
Let’s all speed on to a pure and useful day, folks. Tomorrow will be better. Good cheer to you old buddy.
