Have I Got A Line For You!

Lots of hullabaloo about General Milley. A new book says he went behind President Trump’s back and told the Chinese he’d “Give them a heads up” if they were under threat of imminent attack.” I watched the General defending himself on TV last night with a chest full of medals. Full of himself if you ask me. He reminds me of James Mattoon Scott in the movie Seven Days in May. If General Milley didn’t like President Trump he should have resigned the post he’d been given. Maybe the General is vying for a future in politics. Same book says Speaker Pelosi asked for the nuclear codes to be taken away from The Donald. If any of this is true and I suspect General Milley is the “anonymous source” for the book, then Banana Republic here we come! Nancy said President Trump’s behavior was “reprehensible” and he needed to be removed from office. That’s the pot calling the kettle black.

Cousin Lynee Bourse just returned from a trip to Ireland, describing it as “wonderful.” She and Fred took in Dublin, Killarney, Ring of Kerry and a lot of countryside. They got to see the Irish “tinkers” who travel in horse-drawn covered caravans. Our word for them in this country would probably be gypsies. Lynne recalled her dad saying, “Isn’t worth a tinkers damn” and wondered if it could have originated with the Irish tinkers. Sure could have. Was in Ireland years ago with my mother and sisters. Spent a week driving on the wrong side of the road. One of the highlights was going to Durty Nelly’s. It’s a tavern dating to when the Romans were in Ireland. While out that way we spent a night at Murphy’s Farmhouse. Very nice bed and breakfast with tea served as stout as coffee. Place was a bit different though as chickens wondered in and out during breakfast.

Let’s move along to more profound things. Read the New York Times this morning and saw an article about a possible remake of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. That brought back a memory from when I was about 8 or 9 years old and at my Grandma Murphy’s home in Mission, Kansas. She had a Zenith stereo system in the corner of the living room and it played 78 records. My favorite was an album of Alfred Hitchcock short stories. One of them featured a set of tom-toms playing for a moment. I’d sit there and keep moving the needle back to the tom-tom spot, over and over and over. It must have driven my grandparents just about crazy. But they usually ignored the tom-toms and just let me have at it. Can you think of something you’d like to hear again?
