Cardinal Review

During winter break it is a good time to reflect on many things, basketball included.
The Cardinals: The Cards, of the MRVC West, with their new head coach Frankie Jackson have been hard at it, but a tough schedule and Covid issues have been hampering progress. They are 3-5 at the Holiday break. They did win their last two games over Excelsior Springs and Sherwood. The good thing about many players not dressing out is more underclassmen are getting varsity time and that will pay dividends sooner or later. The Cards have only had two winning seasons since 2009 (13 years). Looking at the schedule it seems with continued hard work and a little luck the Cards should pick up some more wins after the break. They are a ‘never give up squad’ that is for sure. The team is led by five varsity seniors, Tyler Gardner, Noah Adams, Gage Mantonya, Paul Shields and Keaton Townsend. Other varsity players are Mitchell Alexander, Emrie Neal, Xzavier Ray, Brayden Ethridge, Garrett Ethridge, Richard Brown and Dominic Jackson.
The Lady Cards: The Lady Cards with their new Coach Stacie Womack are 4-6 at the Holiday break. They played the 7-1 Harrisonville Wildcats close and lost to Sherwood by one. In other words, the Lady Cards are a hard-working competitive group. They should grab more wins after the break. The Lady Cards have had 7 winning seasons since 2009 (13). They went 21-5 last year and have had four straight winning seasons. They are led by senior Paige Gillund. The other varsity players include Riley Heerdink, Mercedez Brown, Riley Wishard, Ava Potter, Mia Bagley, Hannah Campbell, Ally Cardwell, Skyte Wilson and Allie Goucher.
