Cardinal Relay Team Wins State Medal

Posted

It is great that the CHS 4X400 relay team won a State medal taking 7th at the State Championships on Saturday, May 29 in Jeff City. (But you should know the back story.) The CHS Cardinal relay team, consisting of Sales, Wetzel, McCormack and JP Abernathy, had already broken the school record by running a 3:29.61, taking first at the MRVC meet. They had been ranked #1 in Missouri Class 3 all season. But great things rarely happen without difficulty and sacrifice. JP, the fastest runner on the team, hurt his leg in the 400m race at Sectionals in Odessa and Coach Johnson had to call up an alternate for the relay team. He had a good one in the wings, Brant Bremer. Brant came on board and helped his team get second at Sectionals and, as you now know, 7th at State. They ran their hearts out and even though they had a mishap on one of their exchanges they managed to keep going. With all this, they ran a 3:33.37 and earned that coveted medal. Everybody is proud of these boys (including JP obviously) and impressed by their determination. What memories they will have.
